October was a big month in our house.
This little stinker turned 1! We had Kevin's brother and his puppy over for a little party- we watched baseball and the dogs played and had doggy ice cream. Sadie ate hers up this time! (last time she wasn't so sure about it, and left it unattended so Smokey got it) Her puppy cousin Macy was the unsure one about ice cream this time - I think the metal bowl we put it into scared her - so Sadie got part of her serving too! Another puppy is the best way to wear out a puppy, and they were both beat after a day of play. Smokey pretty well leaves them alone, he's having a harder time getting around but he still loves the ice cream!
October was also when I turned the big 4-0! I debated trying to do a party like we did for Kevin's 40th, but decided I'd prefer to take a trip. I made it a 4 day weekend for myself since my birthday was on a Thursday and spent my actual birthday with my mom -- we had lunch and went to get our nails done, it was fun and a good way to spend the day with the person who really did the work 40 years ago. We also had a short visit with my dad.
Our trip was a road trip to the casinos in Lake Charles, we had never been! We went to the ones in Vegas before going to the ones only 3 hours away. It was a great get-away. We stayed at L'Auberge and also took a shuttle over to check out the newer Golden Nugget. We came out ahead on the craps table, and being right before Halloween both casinos had big costume parties, so we saw some great costumes - we rode the shuttle back with a very creepy Pennywise, and an impressive Jack Sparrow. I am glad we stayed at L'Auberge - the staff and casino floor folks seemed friendlier, but Nugget definitely has more of the Vegas feel and added more dining options (we even took advantage of my Landry's membership to use my birthday $25 credit for dinner Saturday night). It was a good short trip, and on the way back we had time to have lunch with my in-laws.

Summer birthday
I just realized this has been sitting in my drafts since early July...oops..I want to get it posted as soon we'll have some vacation entries (I hope)...
We had our first true party at the new house, and it was a success!
Our goal was to be ready to have people over by Kevin's June birthday, 2 months after we moved in, and we did it.
Decorating is still a work in progress, I could say it is because we've focused on the additional furnishings we needed and that is true but also because decorating just takes me a long time.
In time for the party we added:
real patio furniture -- we shopped all over and Kevin finally found this one online, magic words *no assembly required* (pillows and end tables were HomeGoods finds)
a guest bed! Frame is new, the mattress is actually our old one, but its still a nice one -- and though I was skeptical at first a king really fits in the space and lets us use our previous comforter, which I still love. We gave ourselves a deadline for this one since my brother came in from out of town for the party, and we wanted to have a guest bed to be able to host in the future.
The part was great fun -- it poured rain all morning so we were a little worried, and some folks weren't able to make it due to the weather, but we had a good time visiting with all who made it and the kids (5 total) played well together in the pool.
We chose a Mexican fiesta theme -- catered fajitas was the best way to go. I was able to just pick it up that afternoon and we didn't have to worry about cooking. We kept it in the oven and got it out when it was time to eat. It even came with all the fixing - the chips and queso were used just as much for nachos which I'd have never thought of but our guests enjoyed. We thought we over ordered food but not one piece of meat was left; we also had margaritas (with marg glasses!), beer, sodas, and waters; and the grocery store cake was a hit too...I'm still not sure where the birthday candles I bought ended up. I think birthday boy was relieved to not have to blow out candles.
Kevin spent his actual birthday (Sunday) resting from too much sun, drinks and not enough sleep so we've had to postpone his birthday dinner, but we'll do it another day -- as he recently said he'll get to have his birthday in July.
We are really excited to be able to have people over again.

this is 40
Happy Belated birthday Kevin!
He turned 40 this week, and boy did we celebrate, it just took a few days for me to come back and post here.
We hosted a party last weekend, and I think everyone had a great time. We had wanted to highlight our new neighborhood and found a local bar to host it (no rental charge -score!). It had a great view of downtown and we were able to control the music.
A girl from our old neighborhood made the cake for the party, and she did just what I wanted, and it was delicious (we enjoyed the leftovers all week!) . I am not a fan of the headstones, grim reaper theme for the party, and so I went a different way. We see 40 as just the next chapter in his life, with lots to look forward to so i really liked the 'aged to perfection' idea, and the bar had a statue of Jack Daniel's up there with us so a Jack Daniel's theme was perfect.
On his actual birthday we had a great dinner at a local (new to us) Italian restaurant. it is one of three located right near each other and the way they are situated it feels like you are walking in a courtyard in Italy. Great setting, and delicious food -- amazingly, neither of us had pasta!
As I told K on facebook, he makes 40 look fun!!

Birthday
Last Friday was my birthday and I had a great day.
I took the day off from work. I did that last year too, starting to call it my 'birthday holiday', and I highly recommend it.
We didn't have any big plans, which was fine with me. Having a relaxed and lazy morning was just what I wanted. I slept in a bit, watched some morning tv and then got ready for the day. I tried to get my car a/c fixed - its been acting up for a few days - but wouldn't you know that at the dealership it decided to work and we can't find whats wrong til it isn't working for them to see it, so back home I went. K was going to pick me up from the dealer since I didn't want to spend my day at the dealership (my vacation days DO seem to revolve around car repairs sometimes....).
My only real plans were to get a mani/pedi, and I was able to convince K to join me for his very first pedicure. He wasn't sure if he'd like it, but he was a good sport about it and I do think he liked it, whats not to like about being pampered?!
We had a wonderful dinner at a new to us restaurant, called Raffa's. It was so delicious. I'm indecisive about where to go eat and even driving up there we weren't sure which spot we'd eat at -- its in the same area as the place we went to for K's birthday in June. I'd wanted to check out Raffa's but never had, we looked at the menu and decision made! I love trying a new place, and it was very unique food - we had to ask about several different words on the menu (confit, beure blanc) - I had an inside-out crab-stuffed flounder and K had butternut squash ravioli with duck confit. After dinnner we stopped into a wine bar in the same area. A great way to try wine, I ordered one but didn't like it when I had just the taster portion so our bartender asked what I liked (whites on the sweet side) and picked out 3 possibilities for me - sweet, sweeter, sweetest -- I preferred the middle one, I just wish I remembered the name. Turns out K liked the one that I started with -- which is why wine by the glass is perfect for us -- can hardly fine one we both like...
It was a great day, and instead of a cake we got Culver's custards over the weekend.
K shifted his grading to the weekend and this week so he could spend the day with me -- October birthday means it coincides with midterms...

Birthday bash
My birthday has come and gone, and it was a great one. K likes to say that girls celebrate their birthdays for a week, and I say - why not! I hadn't really intended it, but my celebrations did go on for a full week.
We started with a great dinner at Melting Pot with my sister and her boyfriend last weekend.
The day before my birthday K and I went out to dinner and split a free dessert for my birthday - the loyalty cards give you great birthday bonuses, and thankfully don't sing the song at you :).
On my actual birthday (Thursday), work took me out for lunch - delicious Cajun food - and that night Kevin and I went out for sushi.
My present to myself was a vacation day from work. I may make it an annual tradition, it was so nice to have an extra day off and to get to sleep in the day after my birthday. Its a busy time of year at work but if I wait for a 'good time' to take off I'll never get a day off and I really did need it. It worked with K's schedule too since his class days are earlier in the week. We spent the day together and treated ourselves to a movie: Argo -- GREAT movie and I can see why they're talking Oscars. It was a pretty serious movie, but they also had some great one-liners that we've been repeating since the movie....
Saturday we spent the day at the Renaissance festival, the weather was *perfect* (cool and sunny) and we had a wonderful time spending the day outdoors and were able to meet up with some friends who had decided to go that same day. We go each year and see something new every time - this year we watched a 'fire whip' show - along with revisiting some of our favorites. The theme this weekend was Halloween and so there were even more costumes than normal, and we loved seeing them all. One really impressive one was Freddy Krueger, it was so good that K wanted his photo with it. I'll add the photo as soon as I download it from my camera. (Edit: photo added!) Looking online today, it was record-setting attendance, we could tell it was crowded while we were there - everyone wanted to enjoy the weather. Here is the site where they put up the attendance numbers, being a number cruncher, I love that they post it, and so quickly after the event.
Kevin threw me off the trail of my birthday gift. He'd said he couldn't find what he'd talked about getting me and then surprised me with it on Friday and, even better, he set it up for me today. I now have an ipod and all I have to do is load up my music to it, and make all sorts of playlists. Thanks sweetie!
Its been a great birthday weekend, and I'm not ready to go 'back to reality' tomorrow. I am happy that my day tomorrow should be 'normal' and I'm thinking about everyone bracing for Hurricane Sandy on the east coast.

weekend recap
We had a great weekend!
Our a/c is still out and its getting warm again...Kevin's brother saved the day by bringing over a window unit that he owns. We set it up in the bedroom and have been able to sleep in a cool room -- very good so that we can all get a full night's sleep. I'm sure it looks hilarious from the outside, but don't really care - it gets the job done!
Saturday evening we met my sister and her boyfriend at the Melting Pot for my birthday dinner. Since my birthday falls during the week we decided to celebrate early. It was a great evening! The Melting Pot is a special occasion place to me, kind of pricey but worth it occasionally for a special night out. We easily agreed on a cheese, cooking style and chocolate and each had different salad, drink and entree choices to make the meals exactly what we wanted. Jill - Thanks for suggesting the bacon and brie cheese, delicious!
The restaurant was taking complimentary photos, so we have a cute photo of all 4 of us to commemorate the evening. Very good since even though I brought my camera I often forget to actually TAKE photos and K is usually behind the camera (where he prefers to be) so we have very few photos of us together (something we need to remedy).
The green box is my gift from them, a salad spinner! It'll help me to eat more clean veggies. I know I need to clean my greens and this should help me thoroughly clean them.
Hint: Join the fondue club -- no cost and you get coupons, I redeemed a coupon for 6 chocolate covered strawberries and we'll enjoy them all week.
Sunday was another great day. Kevin and his family attended the Texans game. I watched from home, I wish I could've been there. The stadium was fully BATTLE RED and they kicked Raven-butt!
Sis started a blog of her own, you can read about their adventures on the new blog Gourmet & Gamer, cute title!

Tahoe recap
Hope everyone is having a great Independence Day! We're enjoying a day at home, and I was able to write up our trip and load the pictures...enjoy!
We did a little bit of sightseeing. We had many good views of the lake, it is beautiful
and so clear! I couldn’t take my eyes
off it. One day we drove out to the
Tallac Historic site to see several houses that had been built as summer houses. One was very rustic, the other – the Pope
Estate- was very formal and beautiful.
We took the guided tour (the only way you can go inside it), and were
impressed with it. The house would be
wonderful now – K was in love with the den, and even saw that he has some of
the same books they had on display (books from the time period, but not
necessarily the exact books they had).
It must’ve been quite a spectacle back in the 1920s. Our tour guide was in a 1920s costume and
talked to us as if we were guests of the house, which was a fun way to view it.
The owners of the house were out, so we
were able to see their living quarters (we couldn’t if they were there). From the start it had running water and electricity
and the house had separate guest houses and even a small schoolroom on the
site. I cannot even imagine
traveling back then to get their – it would have taken 2 trains and a boat to
get there from San Francisco.
Our trip to South Lake Tahoe was exactly what we
wanted. We’d decided we wanted something
more on the relaxing end of the spectrum.
When we go to a new city we want to explore and see and do everything
but for this trip we wanted to go somewhere we wouldn’t feel like we had to see
and do a lot so we could take time out to relax, read and just enjoy some
quality time together.
We did just that – we explored the town when we felt like
it, and also spent a lot of time just reading books, sitting out on the patio
enjoying the weather, played the new board game K had bought, and even went to
see a movie!
The weather was better than we could’ve asked for – sunny and
cool. So cool, that we actually had to
grab jackets for some of our outings.
The rest of our time we spent in the city and made some
trips back and forth across the border to Stateline, NV. It is odd to be somewhere that you can so
often travel across the border- NV-CA-NV-CA, I kept forgetting which state we
were in! I also found it so funny how the casinos go
right up to the state line (also a street intersection).
Kevin’s birthday was during our trip and we spent part of
his birthday afternoon at the casino.
He will usually just watch me play, but I finally got him to play after
I quickly lost most of what we started with ($40). He
really enjoyed playing craps – after a while we finally understand it - and had
a run of beginners and birthday luck! He
was up most of the time and having fun.
We ended up about even and what we did spend ($7) made for a very cheap
afternoon of entertainment, and we had a bunch of free drinks while we played!
From our hotel, we were able to walk to some restaurants and
also ventured off in the car to some others.
My favorite restaurant of the entire trip was Scusa Italian Ristorante. The food was delicious – the bread they
bring out is focaccia and the dipping sauce included balsamic vinegar, very
different and delicious. We each had a
pasta dish and it was very fresh. K even
enjoyed the sun-dried tomatoes in his dish!
Other standout restaurants – Swiss Chalet (a first for us to have Swiss
food) and Kalani’s – Pacific Rim inspired food.
We went during happy hour to take advantage of that menu, it was still
kind of pricey. They also had
sushi. I could not get over how many
sushi restaurants there were in town!
Pizza I understand – it’s a ski city in the winter and pizza is warm and
filling and makes the kids happy, but sushi?
Not sure how so many different places can make it…
We hardly ever go to the movies at home, mostly wait until Netflix has it, so we
treated ourselves to a movie on the trip.
We went to see “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World”, a very
different movie. We both enjoyed it,
though a movie about the end of the world is sort of a bummer. I did enjoy seeing Steve Carrell in such a
different role, and we spotted people we recognized from other NBC shows!
We also took over the table in our room (we were lucky
enough to have a kitchenette in the room) with K’s new board game, Twilight
Struggle. He’d wanted to find a game
designed to be a two-player game, and he found a doozy! It is about the Cold War (right up his
alley). We are
still learning how to play, the rule book is big and tough to read. We played one whole game there in several
different sittings and are playing again now that we’re home. Its complicated and we’re each still learning
the strategy. I think we’ll enjoy it
for quite a while, and I am learning more about the Cold war since most of the
cards are referring to actual historic events.
In case you are interested, here is where we stayed and I’d
recommend it. It’s a mix of rentals and
owned units. They had lots of amenities,
including movies for rent and we got them to bring us a wine opener so we could
have some wine in our room one night (we saved some money by getting some
breakfast and dessert stuff at a Safeway about 2 blocks away – we walked to
it!) Only annoyance, the walls must
be thin or the neighbors we had are just annoying, we got a NOISE complaint for
watching a movie at 9 at night, we had to turn the volume up to bear the
dialogue, but it was not loud enough to keep anyone up and who goes to bed at 9
anyway? Even the officer who came to tell
us seemed confused….

Birthday weekend
Its been a busy few weeks...
I came home from work on Friday to find that my sweet husband had baked me a birthday cake, quite a nice surprise. We had a piece that night and another last night, very yummy! homemade icing is WONDERFUL, hard to believe we had everything he needed for the cake and icing at the house....guess we do have quite a collection of stuff in our pantry.
The wedding in Dallas was good, not much of a vacation for us (I forget how busy weddings are). We didn't get to go to Dealy plaza or the 6th floor museum because the UT/OU game was going on right near there and we didn't want to get stuck in traffic. We'll have to make another trip up there to see it. The bride was gorgeous and we did get to see lots of family over the weekend. Staying at the same hotel was great since we were able to see people at breakfast and even hung out in K's cousin's room after the reception.
Our nephew got upset right after the wedding - his dad was a groomsmen and the poor little guy saw his dad walking back up the aisle with the bridesmaid and thought he'd married another woman! They had explained weddings to him but guess it wasn't clear to him that only the bride and groom were getting married, not everyone up there....I'm sure it won't be the last misunderstanding, poor little guy for a few minutes his world turned upside down!
This past weekend was my birthday and I could not have asked for nicer weather for it!
Saturday we cleaned house in the morning, went to a book sale (got a bunch of books for our nephew and a few for us too), and then we went to the Ballunar festival. We've been trying to go for several years but just never make it down there It is held at NASA. You can tour NASA, but we really went just to see the hot air balloons, and they were beautiful. They launch from all over, so you look around and suddenly see one (or more) come from behind the buildings. They are trying to hit a target on the field, and come right overhead....beautiful.....We also saw skydivers and people in what look like dune buggies with parachutes attached in the air. I do NOT want to be in the air in anything that I can then carry away on my back (they walked right by us afterwards), but it is fun to watch. We brought both cameras and took some wonderful pictures (haven't had time to download them yet). We stayed until after sunset to see the GLOW. All of the balloons are inflated on the field and they turn on their burners - lighting up the entire balloon...pictures won't do it justice, it is amazing to see. I'm pretty sure that is the first time I've ever seen a hot air balloon up close. We ended the night at a Halloween costume party hosted by friends, lots of fun! Kevin and I were both hippies - a costume he's wanted to do since our first Halloween together....
Sunday was my actual birthday, and my sister treated me to a movie (Couples Retreat) while Kevin went to the Texans game (they won!). I love going to the movies but mostly watch them at home. It was fun to go to the theatre to see a movie, and after the movie we went out to eat at Sharky's - thankfully they didn't tell the restaurant it was my birthday, I really didn't want to wear a shark hat. We sat outside to eat, such a beautiful day!
This week we're paying for the beautiful weather with lots of rain, but I'll take nice weekends and dreary weekdays....

Heat Emergency
Happy Birthday to my wonderful husband! He loves summer, but I don't think anyone can love THIS much heat. Today has been declared a heat emergency by the National Weather Service, and expects tomorrow to be one too. I would not mind if I never saw another heat record broken, yesterday....104, and we haven't had rain since late May. If anyone knows how to do a successful rain dance, let me know. I don't think washing the car will make it rain this time.
My sister spent the night with us last night because the power at her apartment complex is out, the heat is making the power lines and water lines in many areas struggle (and often break), can't we get some relief?
This was the right year to get an ice cream cake for K's birthday. We got it over the weekend and finished it off last night...so hot, it just cools the body down...yum!
Be safe if you're outside in this heat....

Birthday with pictures
My birthday was everything I could've wanted :) The weather was gorgeous, clear and cool. In the morning, Kevin and I went on a bike ride, so I was actually riding my bicycle when I turned 30 (at 12:33 pm). Then as planned, my family came up and we went out to eat at Tokyohana, an hibachi restaurant. I love the food - had chicken and scallops this time - and really enjoy the show the chef puts on for you as he makes the meals in front of you (onion volcano is my favorite). The chef does lots of tapping of the cooking utensils against the cooking surface, to keep a rhythm I guess. Between the 7 of us, we ordered almost everything on the hibachi menu, so we got to see him prepare lots of different things - chicken, beef, tuna steak, calamari, even a noodle dish for my sister. It was great fun, and actually went a lot faster then expected. At the end of the meal they throw some sort of vegetable to try to get you to catch it in your mouth, and I caught it second try :)
My parents went home from there and we went on to Cecil's (a bar that I love) to celebrate. A few of my friends came to join us. Mimi had gotten back from France that day and she made it out, jet lag and all, and Stacy came up to join us too...yay! It was great to spend time with them both and to have my brother and sis-in-law in town for it too, and as always great to spend time with my sister, Laura, and my hubby too. I also received many messages on my birthday (email, voicemail, facebook, myspace) and the rest of the weekend from people who couldn't celebrate with me. I had a great time, and felt very loved with all the wishes I received.
On Sunday, Kevin and I went to the Texans game, and they had a decisive win against the Bengals!!! 35 to 6, it was great to see them win, and somewhat rare to see them dominate the entire game. Today I went back to work and my staffers took me out to lunch at Treebeard's (shrimp etouffee, yum!)

Odd Birthday twin
Watching the Today show this morning, apparently I share my birthday with the movie Halloween. It turns 30 today too! Its hard to believe I'm 30 today, I don't think it'll feel much different, mostly I'll just have to remember to write my age starting with a 3, not a 2. Based on how bad I am with changing the year when I write the date come January, it'll take a while. I'm in a great place in life and looking forward to what milestones I have to look forward to in my 30s.
1838: Georges Bizet, French composer
1881: Pablo Picasso, Spanish painter and sculptor
1936: Martin Gilbert, Winston Churchill's official biographer
and here is October 25th in history
1415: Henry V's 'Longbowmen' defeat French Knights at the Battle of Agincourt
1854: The infamous 'Charge of the Light Brigade' takes place at Balaklava, during the Crimean War
1951: The Conservative Party, led by Winston Churchill, wins the General Election

I'm already having a great birthday. I have gotten many birthday wishes in email, Facebook, and myspace and get to spend the day with my family. They're coming in town to eat at a hibachi restaurant with me, and later we'll go to a bar to meet up with friends. A low-key celebration and getting to spend time with family and friends is exactly what I want :)
Here are others that I share my birthday with, Pablo Picasso I knew about, but I couldn't have told you the other ones.

Weezer and vacation day
Kevin and I went to the Weezer concert Thursday night (my birthday gift from Kevin). It was a great concert, they played many of my favorites and made Kevin's night by covering a Pink Floyd song. Some of the songs came out when I was in high school, so I've been listening to them for over 10 years, hard to believe. Though the mix of the crowd shows it - it was a mix of all ages. On one side of us was high school kids, and on the other side two parents and their teenage boys, and a similar mix all around us. The 'hootinanee' was good - they had local musicians of all sorts (flute, guitar, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, etc) come on stage to play two songs with the band.
We both love live music and it had been a while since we've seen any, which made it especially fun to see a good live show. We mostly go to see cover bands at bars or small concerts, but most all kinds of live music are fun. We were in the seating section, neither of us wanted to get tickets for the floor, where you stand the whole time. I've had tickets in that area for other shows, but prefer being able to sit when I want to and being far from the moshers/crowd surfers.
I took the day off on Friday so that I could sleep in after the concert and also get stuff done around the house since we'll be busy most of the weekend with birthday celebrations. Kevin is still working from home since his offices were damaged by Hurricane Ike so we were able to spend much of the day together and got a lot accomplished. We took his truck in to get a grill guard put on it (looks good!), got my oil changed, went grocery shopping, went to the bank, and cleaned up the house a little bit.
We also took the opportunity to early vote, so our votes are in for the Presidential election. We voted at a Fiesta grocery store, and the line snaked from the back to the front of the store, through all of the international foods. We had a lot of interesting food to look at while we waited, and took the time to make our shopping list! In total it took about 25 minutes to wait in line and vote, not too bad. I'll take this opportunity to remind everyone out there to go vote!!

Birthday fun
Yesterday was Kevin's birthday, Happy Birthday sweetie!
As an early birthday present, he got a new Wii racing game - MX vs ATV Untamed. Even with the steering wheel it is hard to control, but fun!
He got a lot of birthday wishes and a birthday phone call from Canada from his parents.
After work we celebrated by going out to eat at a local Italian place that we love -Riva's. We each had a glass of red wine, and he had a great pasta dish and I had chicken marsala, yum.
For dessert Kevin wanted chocolate cake, so we went to the Chocolate Bar (Kevin's first time there), and split a slice of cake called "Aunt Etta's". Their slices are huge, and it is a great chocolate cake, with rich chocolate icing. Even with the two of us sharing one piece we had leftovers! Their slogan is "where every hour is a happy hour". So true....
