Tahoe

Hello from Lake Tahoe!  We arrived on Sunday and are having a wonderful time. The weather is perfect, sunny and high in the 60s!  it has been over 100 at home.  We did hear we just missed a big windstorm, we'd seen wind advisories on the road when we drove in.

We've been exploring and relaxing, just what we wanted to do this week.  Im enjoying the opportunity to unplug and will be online very little..

run away

As as kid, I never really wanted to run away from home...

As an adult, I'd really like to run away from work :)      Today I 'ran away' for an hour to have lunch with my sister.  It was just what I needed - a good chance to visit with her and good to get away from the office.   Often I end up working through part of my lunch, and this week 2 of my days had meetings scheduled over my lunch time - they provided lunch (Jason's Deli both times) but I'd much rather be free to go and pick something I want, even leftovers.....

I think the true adult 'run away' is a vacation, and I am very excited about ours, its coming up soon!  I am ready to unplug and get some much needed R&R....

Sprite Attack

A few days ago I was attacked by Sprites, no not little fairies…the soda.  

I opened the fridge to get out my breakfast fixings and a bunch of them rolled out and fell, hitting my right foot.   It hurt like HELL..   and not sure how, but they can cut!

Turns out the case had been opened the wrong way so the ‘fridge pack’ cardboard wasn’t holding them in and so they just rolled out as soon as I opened the door - I'm not sure why we didn't notice it when we put the case IN the fridge.   I put them back in standing up so that won’t be happening again.

It was not a fun way to start the day, I did figure the day can only get better from there!

Locker ramblings

It is odd how all through school I wanted a top locker and now, as an adult, I requested a bottom locker at the gym.   I had a top locker since January, but found that I had to hop up on the bench to hang up my towels (its tough being short) and I am quite clumsy so can just see myself taking a tumble when I don’t land right on the bench.  They had some bottom lockers available right near where my top locker was, so I swapped it out and it has made life much easier.

I remember hating lockers all through intermediate school and honestly can’t remember where my lockers were in high school which makes me think I didn’t use them very much.   Since my last name was at the beginning of the alphabet and they assigned them alphabetically I always had a terrible location…I remember in 6^th grade it was at the far end of the 6^th grade wing, at the opposite end from my early classes and impossible to get to during the 5 minutes we had to get to class amongst the crowds, go to the restroom and all.    The next year it was again way out of the way, down this strange hall that led to 2 classrooms (Mrs Kyle’s if anyone who went to LJIS is reading), and of course I didn’t have either of those teachers…..I must’ve been weighted down with books the entire time because I sure don’t think I could get there and back to my actual classes in time…..I don’t even remember where my last locker was, must not have used that one much either.

I see why students use the backpacks that look like rolling suitcases, they look silly but save their backs and let them have what they need with them.

I’m happy I don’t have to worry about tardy slips anymore….stuck in traffic, late coming back from lunch, late to a meeting – I have a reason and can make up any time that I missed.  I don’t need to be held up longer filling out a tardy slip…

Now that I’m a Tucker, I wonder if I’d have gotten any better locations of lockers?  My guess, they’re all terrible because your classes are spread out and the locker is only going to be in one spot – unless you work it to share friends’ lockers and if I did that I’d never remember what books were where….

I still have to stop sometimes and think what part of the alphabet my last name falls into.  I was in the first part for so long I have to remind myself to go into the M-Z line….it worked to my advantage at my conference recently, the A-L line was long, but the M-Z line was nonexistent, woohoo end of the alphabet people!

I know this is a rambly post, the lockers just got me thinking about middle school.   Kevin is now the proud owner of a wheely briefcase for his new job that starts soon.   It is time to retire his backpack.  He’ll still use it, but can’t show up to teach the class with the backpack, they may think he’s a student!

On another note - boot camp this week was TOUGH!    We do circuits with weights, and they are tough (and effective)!

No moving here

Recently I have heard about several people who have gotten new jobs and will be moving.  My first thought is that I’m happy for them, followed quickly by my second thought  - I'm so glad I’m NOT moving this summer.   K starts his new career next month, and his job is just a short drive from here and we didn’t have to even consider moving.   I do sometimes think I want to leave Houston for the right opporunity, though I have no idea where we would go.

I do enjoy hearing Matthew McConaughey talk about moving   He does radio commercials for centerpoint energy and the latest commercial has him talking about summer as ‘moving season’….I could listen to him talk for a long time….don’t judge :)     

Related to Matthew - I heard that his wedding had a camping theme -- all that money and he set up a bunch of tents on his land?!?!   That sounds like the opposite of how I'd want to celebrate my wedding, to each his own...

Not moving locales doesn’t mean I’m not moving at all, this week I went back to boot camp.  We have a different instructor, and each class is different and TOUGH in its own way.   The new instructor uses a lot of hand weights, which I like – I have a very hard time doing weights on my own.  I'm sore today and wondering how I'll feel tomorrow for class, its a good pain (right?)

electronic voodoo

I have some kind of voodoo against electronics.  I don't know what I do, but always seem to have to have K fix things for me.   Good thing he understands electronics since he has to fix stuff for me VERY often.

Yesterday, I couldn't get our bluray player to do anything  - it wouldn't eject the disc or turn off, using the remote or the buttons on the player.  Finally I had to just pull the plug and start over...I still have no idea why it wouldn't work, its brand new...

Today my tablet wouldn't turn on for me, still have no idea why it wouldn't turn on.  K played with it a few minutes and it came on for him no problem. These are just two of many examples of him having to fix things for me....good thing one of us is good with techie things, and I return the favor with other things I can help him with. 

We've had a pretty quiet weekend, and it was wonderful.   We were able to get caught up from being out of town and just enjoy some time at the house - Smokey enjoyed it too, he is NOT a fan of us going out of town and it took probably 2 days for him to be back to 'normal'.

heading home

We are at the airport getting ready to head home from New Orleans.  We had a wonderful time.  I got some great ideas at my conference and was able to fit in a little bit of sightseeing and lots of good food!  Kevin was able to do a lot of sightseeing – I think that being a tagalong to a conference is the best way to go!   I hope to do a full recap of the places we ate and what we saw…it will take a few days to get back to it.  I’m dreading my work email inbox.   I’ve tried to keep up with what I could, but my days were very busy with sessions so most I just had to file as ‘deal with when I get back’.

I am so glad we had the opportunity to go back to New Orleans, and it won’t be our last trip there.  The people are so friendly and there is lots to see and do.

New Orleans

Hello from New Orleans!

I'm attending a conference being held in the Crescent City and Kevin came along.  The city has plenty for him to do while I'm in my sessions, he's already visited a chess tournament going on in town and will find plenty to keep him busy..

Its hard to believe its been 7 years since we were here...

 

There is good food all around us, we're already enjoying it and will have to be careful not to overdo it!
