March for Babies 2010

The March for Babies was a great success! The weather for the walk was gorgeous and there was a huge turnout. My sister and I drove there together, and since she knows her way around the UH campus (she's an alum) we were able to avoid the traffic jam on the publicized parking route and instead drove around campus and easily parked at the stadium. Good to know alternate routes!

It was a great way to spend the morning, walking for a good cause and getting to visit with my sister. With the generous support of family and friends I was able to raise over $400!

I have to wonder if all charity walks have this many rest stops, water stations. They are I think every half mile. With the rest stops we kept ourselves well-hydrated.

I love to see the signs and shirts saying who people are walking in honor or in memory of. Tiny premie babies, some of whom overcame the odds and some who were simply born too soon. That is why we walk, to give them all a chance.

Terrible Tennis

that is the only kind that either of us play. We decided we wanted to use the tennis courts in our neighborhood and so we bought used tennis rackets on craigslist this weekend. I could not believe how easy it was, the few times I've used craigslist before the item was already gone when I contacted them or some other headache came up. But this time it was so simple, they were available and the woman had 2 to sell - exactly what I needed. I was afraid we'd get one and then have to wait to get a second one...nope, $20 for 2 rackets that look brand new - she said she'd never gotten around to using them.

So, two different nights this week we've gone to the tennis courts and tried them out....we are so bad, but its fun, and a nice way to be outside and spending time together. Hopefully we will improve over time. Last night Kevin was trying to hit the ball and it got stuck in the hole in the racket above the handle but below where the strings are - he couldn't do it again if he tried!

We love our neighborhood and have also gotten registered to use the pool when it re-opens in May. glad to see my HOA fees going to something fun!

Gym Etiquette

Recently, when I was on the elliptical machine at the gym, I noticed a bunch of paper towels on the ground next to me. I wondered where they came from, looked over and realized that the guy next to me has a pile of paper towels on the machine and occasionally uses one to wipe his face and then tosses them on the floor....GROSS!!! I was so grossed out I almost left right then, but powered on. Has he not heard of a gym towel?? In addition to being just gross it seems like the paper towels would hurt, they are the industrial kind you buy in bulk and there is no way I'd want to rub one, or more than one, on my face.

I've seen him since then and he does the same thing, so its not like he did it just that one day. I haven't said anything but kind of thing I should....ugh.

April Fool

I hate April Fool's day, always have....mostly because I hate feeling like the whole day I'm just waiting to get a joke pulled on me. But, I love this time of year and am already looking forward to several things that seemed far away when we started planning but now that we've turned the calendar page over they are right around the corner!

I'm most excited about taking a cruise at the end of the month! We've never been on one, but thought it would be fun, and is a great way to get away without dealing with the hassle of airports. We'll drive down to Galveston and leave from there. We chose the 5-night (went back and forth about taking the 7-night) and so I should finally get to see some beaches with clear, blue water. If you have any suggestions on what to take on the cruise, please let me know. We've been reading about it, but are true newbies to it.

The day before we leave I'm doing my March for Babies walk, and thanks to many generous donations I've already reached my original goal of $400 and gave myself a new goal of $500.

Here is hoping this month has more springlike weather. I hope its dry this weekend for all the Easter egg hunts that will be happening. Last weekend was beautiful...perfect weather to check out the Mercer Arboretum. We had a fun time wandering around the plants, we'll have to go back since we saw only a small part of it. It was their annual plant sale, so we bought some mint plants, I was sold on them when I was told they are hard to kill and would taste good in lemonade (yum!). I tend to forget about hte plants, so Kevin will have to help me to keep them alive...
